The Grove – 1958

Screen Shot 2016-03-28 at 3.42.50 PMStock car racing was the centerpiece of racing in America since the 1930’s. The dirt tracks was where local hotshots could try their luck and maybe move on to USAC or NASCAR. One of the most famous was Williams Grove, near Harrisburg, PA. USAC champ cars raced there until 1959. This photo is from Sunday July 20, 1958, the date of the Indianapolis Sweepstakes. The regular stock car drivers shared the track that day with the likes of AJ Foyt and Eddie Sachs. This is the backstretch with the Grove’s famous steel bridge leading to the infield. The Grove still operates today.
