Switzerland / The Electric Simplon Line

IT039

Built in 1906, the Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon Line connected Bern, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy via the Lotschberg Tunnel (8.5 miles) and the Simplon Tunnel (19 miles) under the Swiss Alps. The line was always electrified due to the build up of smoke in the tunnels from the steam powered engines used in most of the world at the time. This poster by Otto Baumberger was part of a major ad campaign promoting the BLS in the 1930’s.
