In 2014, the USGA did the double, by hosting both the Men’s and Women’s US Open’s over the famed Pinehurst (NC) Number 2 course. Pinehurst was established in the early 1900’s by a New Englander looking for a place for a nice retirement community. Donald Ross was hired to layout some golf courses, and Number 2 has long been recognized as his American masterpiece. Donald Ross was a Scotsman from Dornoch in the Sunderland region but spent most of his career in the United States. The Men’s Open was won by Martin Kaymer of Germany while the Women’s Open was won by Michelle Wie of the USA.
